COUNTY TOWN IN RUNNING FOR GREAT PLACE AWARD
Shrewsbury Town Council says "positive partnerships" across the town have led to it being shortlisted in a national award scheme.
The Academy of Urbanism has announced that Shrewsbury is a finalist in the great town or small city category of its 2024 awards.
They recognise the “best, most enduring or most improved urban environments” in the country, and the county town is up against Bath in Somerset and Lewes in Sussex.
The overall winner will be announced at the Urbanism Awards ceremony in London 13 November.
The Academy says the awards are about identifying, learning from, and celebrating great places.
Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor David Vasmer, welcomed a delegation of judges to Shrewsbury as part of the shortlisting process.
The tour they were taken on highlighted the important landmarks, projects and facilities "that we are extremely proud of and which make Shrewsbury a great place to live, work and visit," he said.
Having the town recognised alongside successful towns like Bath and Lewes was "testament to the positive partnership work" taking place between local authorities and organisations in Shrewsbury, the mayor added.
