30 of the smallest cities in the world

The word "city" tends to conjure up images of a big, bustling industrial hub of a place, but some cities are teeny tiny places, punching above their weight when it comes to status. The lines regarding what constitutes a city can often be blurred—some nations attribute city status according to size and population density, others according to historical importance, still others according to the presence or otherwise of notable buildings. The indistinct definitions can make it difficult to cohesively rank the size of cities, and some places around the world are referred to as either a town, village, or city, depending on who you ask! But while some might quibble over detail, these 30 small-but-mighty settlements are all proud to declare themselves cities despite their less-than-large stature. Curious? Click through the following gallery to discover some of the smallest cities in the world.

Historical figures called crazy, who were right all along

In some cases, these heroes of humanity couldn't even stick around long enough to see their work be appreciated. But we can certainly appreciate them now. The mysterious and murderous history of Lake Mead

Lake Mead is a large reservoir located approximately 40 minutes from Las Vegas. The man-made lake is fed by the Colorado River and provides drinking water for millions of people in the state of Nevada. It’s neither the most beautiful nor the most impressive lake in the region, but nonetheless it’s been making plenty of headlines in recent years. Dramatic drops in water levels due to climate change have consistently reduced the size of the lake for decades, with a sharp acceleration of the issue in recent years. During the summer of 2022, the receding shoreline has revealed more than one nasty surprise. Human remains discovered by a diver in the lake's Callville Bay in October 2022 have just been identified as belonging to a 39-year-old man who is believed to have drowned in the reservoir nearly five decades ago. Officials announced on March 28 that Donald Smith was a Las Vegas resident who reportedly drowned in April 1974, per CNN, though it's believed it was accidental. His bones are, however, at least the sixth discovery of human remains at the reservoir in the past year. Click through the following gallery to learn about the now infamous Lake Mead and the deadly secrets that lie in its depths.
